WhyGolf Announces Its Smartest GPS Update Yet: "Plays Like" Yardages, 3D Course View, and Strokes Gained Benchmarking
Elevation-adjusted distances, 3D hole flyovers, shot dispersion learned from your real misses, and strokes gained comparisons against the PGA Tour, scratch golfers — and your own foursome.
Today we're rolling out the biggest update to WhyGolf's GPS since launch. Five new features make the app smarter about the course you're standing on, smarter about the game you actually play, and a lot more fun to compare with your friends. Here's everything in the update and how to use it.
"Plays Like" Yardages
A GPS number tells you how far away the flag is. It doesn't tell you how far the shot plays. An uphill approach plays longer than the laser says; a downhill tee shot plays shorter — and guessing the difference is how good swings end up in front bunkers.
WhyGolf now shows a "Plays Like" yardage on every shot: an elevation-adjusted distance that reflects how far the shot really plays. You still see the straight-line GPS number, but the club decision gets made off the number that matters.
3D Course View
Standing on the tee of a hole you've never seen is a guessing game. Now you can fly over every hole in 3D before you play it — see the elevation changes, where the hazards actually sit, and the smart line from tee to green.
Use it on the tee to pick a target you can trust, or scout the whole course from the couch the night before. Either way, you're no longer aiming at a hole you can't see.
Custom Shot Dispersion
Most golf tech assumes you hit it like a Tour player. You don't — and neither do we. WhyGolf now learns your misses: your real shot patterns feed directly into aim and club recommendations.
If your 7-iron leaks right under pressure, your aim point accounts for it. If your driver dispersion is wider than you'd like to admit, the smart line respects it. The recommendations get better every round you play, because they're built from your game. Custom Shot Dispersion is included with WhyGolf PRO.
Strokes Gained Benchmarking
Strokes gained already tells you where your game gains and loses shots — off the tee, on approach, around the green, and putting. Now you can benchmark those numbers against PGA Tour players, scratch golfers, or any handicap level you choose.
Instead of a vague "work on your short game," you see exactly what separates your game from the level you're chasing — and exactly which part of your game closes the gap fastest. Strokes Gained Benchmarking is included with WhyGolf PRO.
Friends' Strokes Gained
Every group has the guy who swears he's striping it. Now there's data. You can see your friends' strokes gained stats right in the app and settle, once and for all, who's actually carrying the foursome — and whose putter is writing checks the rest of his game can't cash.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get the new features?
Update WhyGolf to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play. The new features appear automatically once you're on the newest release. Custom Shot Dispersion and Strokes Gained Benchmarking are part of WhyGolf PRO.
What does "Plays Like" distance mean?
A "Plays Like" yardage adjusts the straight-line GPS distance for elevation change, showing how far the shot effectively plays. A 150-yard shot that's steeply uphill might play like 160, and WhyGolf now does that math for you on every shot.
What is strokes gained?
Strokes gained measures every shot against a statistical baseline, so you can see exactly where you gain or lose strokes — off the tee, on approach, around the green, and putting. With this update, WhyGolf PRO members can benchmark their strokes gained against PGA Tour players, scratch golfers, or any handicap level.
Is there a free golf app with strokes gained analytics and no hardware?
Yes. WhyGolf provides strokes gained analytics using only your phone, with no sensors or club tags required.
How much does WhyGolf cost?
WhyGolf's expansive free tier includes AimAssist, strokes gained tracking and analysis, GHIN-integrated scorecard and bet tracking, club recommendations, and more for free.
Users who want to add access to the new Custom Shot Dispersion and Strokes Gained Benchmarking features, plus Green Slope Maps, 65+ Academy videos, and additional green reading tools, can upgrade to the PRO plan at $8.33 monthly or $99.99 a year.
