Estimates from a model, not measurements. “Gap” is carry to the next club: under 8 yards is stacked, over 18 is a hole in your bag. Sources and method are below the tool.
How the calculator works
Most distance calculators multiply your swing speed by one number per club and stop there. This one models the things that actually move the ball, using published launch-monitor and on-course data rather than a guess.
- Driver carry from swing speed. Each mile per hour of driver speed is worth about 2.45 yards of carry on a solid strike, which is what the model assumes (an average strike is closer to 2.3). The PGA Tour’s own ShotLink measurement puts the tour average club head speed at 117 mph for the 2026 season (PGA Tour Club Head Speed), with a 288-yard carry and a 306-yard drive on the measured holes, which is 2.46 yards of carry per mph. TrackMan’s earlier tour set (113 mph, 275 yards carry) gives the same 2.43 to 2.46 ratio. If you already know your driver or 7-iron carry, the model works backwards from that instead.
- Every other club as a ratio of the driver. A 7-iron carries about 62% of a tour player’s driver and about 65% of a 15-handicap’s, because amateurs hit the driver relatively less efficiently and play stronger-lofted irons. The model blends the two ratio sets based on how far you carry the driver, using Shot Scope’s on-course averages and TrackMan’s tour averages.
- Iron lofts. Strong-lofted game-improvement irons add about 4% per club; traditional lofts take 4% off. A modern 7-iron at 29° is a 1990s 6-iron.
- Roll. A driver rolls about 6% of its carry on a normal fairway, woods 5%, hybrids and long irons 4%, mid irons 3%, short irons and wedges 1 to 2.5%. Firm fairways add about 60% more roll, soft ones cut it by 60%.
- Your range. The shot-to-shot spread around each number, about 6% either way for a solid striker. On-course data says a 15-handicap’s 7-iron varies by 15 yards or more from swing to swing, so the range matters more than the number.
Benchmarks come from the Arccos 2026 Driving Distance Report (5 million rounds, 37,000 golfers), the Shot Scope 2026 performance averages by handicap, TrackMan’s PGA and LPGA Tour averages, and the PGA Tour’s published club head speed statistic. Where a band is not published, it is marked as interpolated.

Golf club distance FAQ
How far should I hit each club?
It depends on your driver swing speed and strike. An average male amateur swinging the driver at 93 mph carries it about 214 yards and hits a 7-iron around 140 to 150 yards, with roughly 10 yards between each iron. PGA Tour players average 117 mph of club head speed and a 288-yard driver carry (2026 season, per the PGA Tour) and hit a 7-iron about 180 yards. Enter your own number in the calculator above for a full-bag estimate.
How far does the average golfer hit a 7-iron?
On the course, Shot Scope data puts a 15-handicap man at 154 yards total with a 7-iron, a 20-handicap at 146 and a 25-handicap at 132. A scratch golfer averages 178. For women, a 15-handicap averages 119 yards and a scratch player 156. PGA Tour players carry the 7-iron 172 yards and LPGA Tour players 141.
Is 150 yards a good 7-iron distance?
Yes. A 150-yard 7-iron is right at the 15-handicap average for men and ahead of the 20-handicap average of 146. It implies a 7-iron club speed of about 78 to 82 mph and a driver speed in the mid 90s, which is above the 93 mph male amateur average.
What swing speed do I need to hit a driver 250 yards?
About 93 to 95 mph for 250 yards of total distance on a normal fairway with a solid strike, or 98 to 102 mph to carry it 250. Each mile per hour of driver speed is worth roughly 2.3 to 2.5 yards of carry, so going from 90 to 100 mph adds about 24 yards.
How far should a beginner hit each club?
A typical male beginner swings the driver at 80 to 85 mph and hits it 180 to 200 yards total, a 7-iron 110 to 125 yards and a pitching wedge 80 to 90. Women beginners average a 150 to 175 yard driver and a 65 to 90 yard 7-iron. Beginners also have the widest shot-to-shot spread, so treat the calculator's numbers as a ceiling until your strike settles down.
How much distance do you lose with age?
Arccos data from 5 million rounds shows men in their 20s averaging 237 yards off the tee, 230 in their 40s, 219 in their 50s, 206 in their 60s and 190 at 70 and over. Driver swing speed falls from about 97 mph in your 20s to 83 in your 60s, which costs about 25 yards of 7-iron carry between 30 and 60. Speed training and ground-force work slow the decline.
How far should a 60-year-old hit a 7-iron?
The average man in his 60s swings the driver about 83 mph and carries a 7-iron about 125 yards, with a total driver distance of 206 yards. A fit 60-year-old with good strike and modern lofts will beat that comfortably; a 130 to 140 yard 7-iron is a strong number for the age group.
What is the average driver distance for a 50-year-old?
219 yards total for men in their 50s according to the Arccos 2026 Driving Distance Report, from a driver swing speed of about 88 mph. Women in their 50s average roughly 175 yards.
How far do PGA Tour and LPGA Tour players hit each club?
PGA Tour 2026 season averages from ShotLink: 117 mph club head speed, 175 mph ball speed, 288 yards of driver carry and 306 yards of driving distance. Scaling TrackMan's per-club tour averages to that driver, tour players hit the 3-wood about 254 yards, the 5-iron 203, the 7-iron 180 and the pitching wedge 142. LPGA Tour players average 96 mph with the driver for a 223-yard carry and a 256-yard average drive, and carry the 5-iron 166, the 7-iron 143 and the pitching wedge 111 (TrackMan 2024). The full table is in the charts above.
Should I use carry or total distance?
Carry for anything into or over trouble: water, bunkers, false fronts and approach shots to the green. Total for tee shots on open holes and for club selection when you are playing for position. The calculator shows both. Most golfers overestimate their distances because they remember total distance from one flushed shot and use it for carry.
How many yards should there be between each club?
About 10 to 15 yards between irons for most golfers and 11 to 12 on the PGA Tour. Gaps under 8 yards mean two clubs are doing the same job; gaps over 18 yards leave a distance you cannot hit with a full swing. The calculator flags both. Wedges and long clubs are where most bags have a hole, usually between the pitching wedge and sand wedge or between the longest iron and the shortest wood.
How do I find my swing speed without a launch monitor?
Divide your driver carry distance on a solid strike by 2.45, or your total distance by about 2.6. A 230-yard carry implies roughly 94 mph. Ball speed divided by 1.48 also gives club speed. For a real number, most driving ranges now have a launch monitor, or the WhyGolf App will build your true distances from GPS-tracked shots on the course.
Why do I hit my irons shorter than the chart?
Usually strike, not speed. An off-center hit loses 5 to 12% of ball speed, and amateurs strike the center of the face on fewer than half of iron shots. The other common causes are traditional-loft irons (a 35-degree 7-iron goes 8 to 10 yards shorter than a 30-degree one), a steep angle of attack that adds spin, and playing in cold air. Temperature costs about 2 yards per 10 degrees Fahrenheit and altitude adds about 2% per 1,000 feet.
Why do my new irons go farther than my old ones?
Loft. A 7-iron in 1990 was 39 to 41 degrees; today a standard 7-iron is 31 to 33 degrees and a game-improvement 7-iron can be 28 to 30. That is a club and a half stronger, so the new 7-iron flies like an old 5-iron. Use the Iron lofts selector to see the difference.
How accurate is this calculator?
Within about 5 to 8% for a golfer who strikes it solidly, which is what the model assumes and as good as any model without measured data. The estimate is calibrated to TrackMan tour averages and Shot Scope on-course averages by handicap. Your real distances vary shot to shot by more than that, which is why the tool shows a range. Measure your actual carry with a launch monitor or GPS shot tracking and re-check twice a season, since speed, lofts and the ball all drift.
What club should I use for 150 yards?
For the average male amateur, a 7-iron for 150 yards of carry with a solid strike, a 6-iron if you are between clubs or hitting into wind. A 15-handicap woman would need a hybrid or 5-wood. Tour players hit a 9-iron or pitching wedge. Enter your number above to see which of your clubs carries 150.
