Green Reading Tools in WhyGolf App: Green Reader + Green Slope Maps
A comprehensive approach to understanding slope, break, and putting decisions.
Article by Brian Henninger, 2-Time PGA TOUR Winner & Coach | Updated February 2026
A putt has a higher chance of going in if it approaches from the high side — the “Tour Side.”
Many amateurs often under-read break for a few reasons:
Lack of a systematic approach to green reading
Misinterpreting uphill vs downhill influence on speed
Over-relying on their eyes to detect break
The WhyGolf App offers two unique tools to help you build a better approach to reading greens:
Green Reader estimates how much a specific putt may break based on distance and slope.
Green Slope Maps for tens of thousands of golf courses.
Read on to learn how these two features can help you build a systematic approach to reading greens.
WhyGolf Green Reader: Get the EXACT Read for Any Given Putt
The Green Reader* estimates how much a putt will break based on side slope, up/down slope, length, and green speed.
Golfers looking to improve their green reading ability will find the tool useful in two ways:
1. Learn How A Putt's Slope, Length, and Green Speed Affects Break
A 12-foot putt with 1% upslope and 2% side slope on an 11-stimp green may require roughly 12 inches of aim outside the hole.
Now change one variable.
If the same putt is rolled on a 10-stimp green, it will break less. Slower greens reduce lateral movement because the ball loses energy more quickly.
Small changes in green speed materially affect break. Yet most golfers don’t intuitively adjust enough when conditions change.
Using the Green Reader during practice helps quantify that relationship.
By comparing slope, distance, and stimp against actual results, you begin to internalize how speed influences break.
2. Calibrate Your Green Reading
The Green Reader isn’t meant to replace your read — it’s meant to refine it.
On a practice green, you can read a putt with your eyes and feet, commit to a line, and roll it. If it misses low, you under-read the slope. If it misses high, you likely over-read it.
The Green Reader gives you a structured reference point. After making your read, you can compare your perception to an estimated break based on distance and slope.
Over time, that feedback loop sharpens your ability to detect subtle tilt. What once felt flat becomes recognizable as meaningful slope.
The goal isn’t dependency — it’s calibration.

Green Slope Maps
Green slope maps provide a visual overview of a green’s topography — including elevation changes, tilt direction, and contour flow.
Inside the WhyGolf app, green slope maps are available for thousands of courses worldwide, both on your phone and Apple Watch.
Green Slope Maps make it easier to:
Avoid short-siding yourself
Easily figure out if a putt is uphill or downhill
Anticipate how putts will break from different sections of the green
These maps are most valuable for course preparation and in-round decision-making.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a green reading app?
A green reading app provides visual and/or data-driven tools to help golfers understand slope and predict how a putt will break.
Does the WhyGolf app include green slope maps?
Yes. The WhyGolf App provides detailed Green Slope Maps for tens of thousands of golf courses worldwide. To access them, you'll need to subscribe to the PRO plan.
Are WhyGolf's green reading tools available on the Apple Watch?
Yes — WhyGolf’s green reading tools are available on the Apple Watch.
Both the Green Slope Maps and the Green Reader can be accessed directly from your Apple Watch when you’re on the course.
Once your iPhone is paired and the WhyGolf Watch app is installed:
Green Slope Maps display the slope direction and severity of the green right on your wrist.
Green Reader helps you interpret the break and understand how the putt should move based on the slope data.
This allows you to check green contours quickly without pulling your phone out of your pocket.
How does the WhyGolf Green Reader work?
The WhyGolf Green Reader factors in side slope, uphill or downhill gradient, putt length, and green speed (stimp) to estimate the expected break for a given putt.
Does the Green Reader replace traditional green-reading skill?
No. The goal is to support structured understanding so golfers develop stronger independent reads over time.
Can I use the WhyGolf Green Reader in competition?
The WhyGolf Green Reader is not intended for use during competitive rounds or rounds posted for GHIN handicap purposes.
