Step 1: Calculate the Score Differential for a Round
A score differential converts one round into a number comparable across every course. The formula:
Score differential = (113 / slope rating) x (adjusted gross score - course rating - PCC)
Here is a real example. You shoot an 88 from tees rated 71.3 / 128, and PCC for the day is 0.
- Divide 113 by the slope: 113 / 128 = 0.883
- Subtract the course rating from your score: 88 - 71.3 - 0 = 16.7
- Multiply: 0.883 x 16.7 = 14.7
That 88 is worth a 14.7 differential. Play the same 88 on an easier course rated 69.8 / 118 and the differential becomes (113 / 118) x (88 - 69.8) = 0.958 x 18.2 = 17.4. Same score, three strokes worse in handicap terms, because the easier course expected more from you.
Differentials are rounded to one decimal, and this is the number the system keeps for each round. Your scores themselves do not go into the index; only their differentials do.
Step 2: Average Your Best 8 of the Last 20
Once you have 20 posted rounds, the handicap index is the average of the 8 lowest score differentials in that group, rounded to one decimal place. No multiplier, no bonus factor. Just the average.
Suppose your 8 lowest differentials of the last 20 are 12.1, 12.8, 13.4, 13.9, 14.2, 14.7, 15.0 and 15.3. They add up to 111.4, and 111.4 / 8 = 13.925, so your handicap index is 13.9.
The other 12 rounds, including the two 98s, contribute nothing. This is why your index is not your average score. Most golfers with a 13.9 index shoot in the high 80s on a normal day, and play to the index roughly one round in four or five.

Step 3: Convert Your Index Into a Course Handicap
Your handicap index is portable. The number of strokes you actually get on a given day is the course handicap, and it depends on the tees you play:
Course handicap = handicap index x (slope rating / 113) + (course rating - par)
Take the 13.9 index from above, playing the 71.3 / 128 tees on a par 72 course:
- 13.9 x (128 / 113) = 13.9 x 1.133 = 15.7
- Course rating minus par: 71.3 - 72 = -0.7
- 15.7 - 0.7 = 15.0, rounded to 15
So a 13.9 gets 15 strokes from these tees. Move up to tees rated 68.5 / 117 and the same golfer gets 13.9 x 1.035 - 3.5 = 10.9, rounded to 11. The course handicap is always rounded to a whole number, and most courses print a conversion chart near the first tee so you do not have to do this by hand.
Playing handicap is one more step that only matters in competition. It is your course handicap multiplied by a handicap allowance for the format. In the US the recommended allowance for individual stroke play is 95 percent, so the 15 above becomes 15 x 0.95 = 14.25, rounded to 14. The Adjustments Most Golfers Never Hear About

Net double bogey. The maximum score you can post on any hole for handicap purposes is par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive on that hole. A 13.9 index with a course handicap of 15 gets a stroke on the 15 hardest holes, so on one of those par 4s the cap is 4 + 2 + 1 = 7. Take a 10 there and it goes in as a 7. This is what turns your gross score into the adjusted gross score, and it is why a single disaster hole does not wreck your index.
Playing conditions calculation (PCC). At the end of each day, the system compares every score posted at a course to what those golfers were expected to shoot. If the field played much worse than expected (wind, rain, brutal pins), every differential that day gets adjusted by up to -1 (easier conditions) to +3 (harder). Most days the PCC is 0, and you never have to calculate it yourself.
Exceptional score reduction. Post a round whose differential is 7.0 or more strokes below your current index and the system reduces your index by an extra 1.0. At 10.0 or more below, the reduction is 2.0. This is how the system reacts quickly when your game jumps.
The soft cap and hard cap. The system remembers your low handicap index from the past 365 days. Common Mistakes When Calculating a Handicap
